About this event

A catastrophic flash flood struck northern Nepal on the morning of 26 August 2026 after an apparent earthquake-triggered ice-rock avalanche / rockslide near the Nepal–Tibet border released a massive surge of water, mud and debris into the Lhende Khola and Bhote Koshi rivers. Key impacts (as of latest reports): At least 95 people killed in Nepal (toll expected to rise). Hundreds missing, including approximately 384–391 travellers (291 foreign nationals — among them over 100 Indians, plus British, American, Malaysian, South African and other nationals) as well as Nepali guides, security personnel (dozens of Nepal Army, Police and Armed Police Force members), hydropower workers and border staff. Widespread destruction in Rasuwa district (especially Syaphru Besi and Timure) with effects extending into Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan and neighbouring areas. Critical infrastructure heavily damaged: multiple bridges and sections of road washed away, hydropower projects disrupted (approx. 430 MW capacity affected — over 12% of national hydropower), communications and power cut in affected zones. China’s Gyirong (Kerung) port and surrounding areas also hit by related mudslides, with “major casualties” reported. Rescue operations involving the Nepal Army, police and helicopters are underway, with over 100 people already airlifted. High water levels are currently limiting helicopter landings in the worst-hit zones. Authorities have issued alerts for communities along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers and warned of possible secondary flooding due to remaining upstream blockages. ImpactMatrix Status: Active crisis monitoring – real-time impact tracking, volunteer coordination and partner response support recommended for search-and-rescue, medical, shelter and infrastructure assessment needs in the affected Himalayan districts.
